Saudi Iqama Residence Permit Guide: Rules, Expiry Check, and Renewal
An Iqama is the residence permit issued to a resident in Saudi Arabia. If you hold one, the rules below decide who must obtain it, how it must be kept, when it must be renewed, and which renewal route applies to your case. The employer route and the family and domestic route are separate, and they must not be merged. Start by fixing which route applies to you, because the conditions stated for the employer route are not the conditions stated for the family and domestic route, and no fee amount and no penalty amount is stated in this guide. This guide states the official wording as checked on 28 October 2026. It does not state that the wording is current after that date — confirm the current position on the live official screens before you act.
The residence permit rules stated by the Ministry of Interior
The Ministry of Interior page on Residence Permit (Iqama) rules states the following rules. No expiry check route and no fee amount is stated on that page.
Employers must obtain residence permits for their employees to enable them to move in the city where they work. When an employee travels outside the Kingdom on an entry visa, the employer must keep the employee residence permit until his return. Companies, establishments and individuals must obtain residence and work permits for their employees. It is illegal to employ an alien who does not possess a residence or work permit.
If the passport or residence permit is lost, the incident must be reported to the passports authority within 24 hours. If no passport authority is nearby, the incident must be reported to the nearest police station. A resident alien must present the residence permit to passports officers at their request. The resident must keep the residence permit safely and never hand it to others. Pawning it is strictly prohibited.
Lost or damaged residence permits are replaced with new ones, stamped as “Replacement”, and the validity of the replacement is the same as the original permit, until the expiry date.
The householder rules state that the householder residence permit includes a permit for his wife and legal minors, sons and daughters. The householder son or daughter above the age of 18 years must be a passport holder and obtain a separate visa after paying the applicable fee. The applicable fee is not stated on the page. The resident householder dependents are not allowed to work without the permission of the concerned authorities. Those lines apply only to the householder and dependent wording stated here.
When renewal must happen, and the penalty wording
The Ministry of Interior page states the renewal timing and the penalty position in the following wording, exactly as stated on that page: “Residence permits must be renewed 3 days before expiration date. First-time violators pay a fine equals to the renewal charge. The fine is doubled in case of a second violation. If a resident violates the rule 3 times, deportation will be his punishment.”
That wording states no amount. No amount for the renewal charge and no amount for any fine is stated here. No grace period is stated in the Ministry wording quoted here. Whether the 3 days run before the expiry date, after it, or both is not settled by the Ministry wording quoted here, and must be confirmed on the live official screen for your case before you act.
Checking whether a permit is active or expired
Absher states the current inquiry service in the following description: “This service enables the beneficiary to electronically inquire about the status and validity of a resident ID (Iqama) and its expiration date, whether it is active or expired.”
No field list, step list, or result wording beyond that description is given here. Absher does not publish the fields or steps for this check in the description quoted above — confirm them on the live Absher screen for your case before you act. Do not rely on a click path or a field list from another source as the route for this inquiry.
Absher also states a health insurance inquiry service in the following description: “This service enables the beneficiary to inquire about his/her health insurance validity in the MoI systems electronically.” That description states that an insurance validity inquiry exists. It states no insurance requirement, no provider, and no renewal route, and none is stated in this guide.
Resident ID issue and renewal for family members and domestic workers
Absher states two separate services for family members and registered domestic workers. Their scope is limited to family members and registered domestic workers only, as worded, and neither service is stated as a company worker route on the Individuals platform.
The issue service is described as follows: “This electronic service allows beneficiaries to easily issue a Resident ID for a family member or registered domestic worker through the Absher platform, with the option to select an issuance period starting from three months or multiples thereof.”
The renewal service is described as follows: “This electronic service allows beneficiaries to easily renew a Resident ID for a family member or registered domestic worker through the Absher platform, with the option to select a renewal period starting from three months or multiples thereof.”
No fee, step, or document wording is given here for either service. The three month starting point and the multiples wording are the only period wording stated for those two services in this guide. The family and domestic services are not a route for a company-sponsored worker.
Employer renewal through Absher Business
Absher Business states a separate employer renewal service. The service enables the establishment owner to renew the resident identity (Iqama) for his or her workers online. The beneficiaries are companies and establishments owners. The route is stated as “My Business Services> Iqama Renewal”, and the service is stated as available immediately through the Absher Business platform. This is an employer route. It does not state a worker self service renewal route, and none is stated in this guide.
The conditions stated for that service are as follows:
- Payment for the desired period for Iqama renewal.
- The sponsoree should not have any unpaid traffic violation.
- The sponsoree passport should be valid.
- The sponsoree should not be registered as absent.
- The sponsoree and his family members, if over 6 years old, should have fingerprint and photo registered in Absher.
- Sponsorees must have medical insurance, and for their family member or members, if any.
- “Validity of work permit for the worker.”
- The sponsoree must not have male family member or members equal to or greater than 18 years.
- The sponsoree must not have any family members included in his passport. Each family member must have a separate passport.
No fee amount is stated in those conditions, and no fee amount is stated in this guide. The conditions list includes “Validity of work permit for the worker.” No work-permit procedure is stated here.
Issuance conditions in the January 2022 guide only
The Absher User Guide dated January 2022 states issuance conditions. Read the following list only as January 2022 wording. No condition in this list is stated here as a current condition.
The January 2022 issuance conditions, in substance, are: payment of issuance fees plus any delay violation fees, with no amount stated in this guide; payment of traffic violations logged against the worker or companion; existence of an entry (border) number; passing the medical check at approved medical centres; the family member or worker must be inside the Kingdom; the passport must be valid at issuance; and fingerprints and photo must be registered.
No fee amount from the January 2022 guide is stated in this guide. Do not treat a January 2022 condition as a current condition without a live re-check on the current Absher screen.
What this guide does not state
No current Iqama issuance or renewal fee amount is stated here for any category. No current late-renewal penalty amount is stated here. No renewal walkthrough, field list, menu path, or documents list for issuance or renewal is stated here. No renewal route from outside the Kingdom, digital Iqama procedure, card delivery procedure, or reprint procedure is stated here. Whether the 3-day rule runs before expiry, after expiry, or both is not stated here. If a live screen does not state an item for your case, treat that item as unstated for your case, and confirm it on the live official screen before you act.
Exit re-entry visas and final exit visas are separate guides. Their procedures are not stated in this guide.
