Qatar Visa Extension and On-Arrival Visa Rules Explained

Qatar’s visa extension rules split into several different services with different fees, and mixing them up is easy: QR200 appears twice, for two different things, and QR100 is not an extension fee at all. This guide keeps each figure attached to the service that states it, using only official MOI and Hukoomi pages.

Extending a tourist, business or other visa: QR200 per month

Hukoomi’s “Extend Visa” service (Ministry of Interior, last updated 11 January 2021) states: individuals travelling to Qatar on tourist, business or other visas can extend their visas by submitting a request to MOI if the visa concerned is extendable. Embassies and authorised persons can also issue the extension on a traveller’s behalf.

Online steps: log in with a smartcard to the MOI e-services portal; click “Recruitment and Visa” then “Extend Visa”; fill in the required information; select the required extension period; pay the appropriate fees. Offline: download and fill in the application form, submit it to the General Directorate of Passports at MOI with the documents listed in the paper form, and pay the appropriate fees. The fee is QR200 per month. After online payment, the system shows a confirmation message and a visa extension receipt for each selected visa. For family visits, extension requires a medical and fingerprint check. The service can also be used through the Metrash mobile app.

Not stated: the available extension periods or maximum total stay; which visas count as extendable; the exact information fields; or any apply-before-expiry timing rule.

Extending an exempted visa: fees are variable

Hukoomi’s “Request to Extend Exempted Visa” service (last updated 21 December 2021) states: visitors and tourists may submit a request to extend an exempted visa on the MOI website. Steps: enter a visa or passport number; select nationality; enter the verification code from the picture or audio; click “Extend”. Fees are stated only as “Service fees are variable” — no amount is given. For exempted nationalities, the page points to the Visit Qatar website. Extension length, any cap, any timing rule, any login requirement, and any fee amount are not stated.

Overstaying: QR200 per day, no cap stated

Hukoomi’s “Pay Visas Overstay Fines” page states a fee of QR200 per day as the overstaying fine. Steps include smartcard login to the MOI e-services portal, clicking “Recruitment and Visa” then “Visa Fines”, and entering the 12-digit visa number and clicking “Query”. For more information, the page gives the MOI call centre number 2367111. No cap on the total overstay fine is stated on the page. The MOI fees portal also offers overstay fine payment (including through the Metrash app), but states no fine amount or cap on the page checked.

On-arrival visas: the categories, as listed by MOI

MOI’s General Directorate of Passports page lists these on-arrival categories (link titles as shown). Detail pages were opened only where noted; the rest are reported from the list titles, with that limit attached:

  • Free on-arrival tourist visa for 90 days, non-extendable, for 43 countries (detail page not opened).
  • Free on-arrival tourist visa valid for 30 days, extendable for a similar period, for 39 countries (detail page opened): passport valid at least three months, confirmed return ticket, confirmed hotel reservation or clear address, and health insurance from an accredited insurance company. No extension fee, timing rule, online route or overstay fine is stated on the detail page.
  • 90-day visa-free entry for US citizens (detail page not opened).
  • Qatar-Oman Joint on-arrival tourist visa for 30 days, extendable, for a fee of QR100, for 6 countries: Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Macau, Mauritius, Montenegro, and S. China (Taiwan) (detail page opened): same four conditions as the 39-country category. No extension length, extension fee or timing rule is stated.
  • Free on-arrival tourist visa for a maximum of 30 days for Pakistani, Indian and Thai nationals (detail page opened): passport valid at least three months, confirmed round-trip ticket, confirmed hotel reservation through discoverqatar.qa only (hotel reservations from other sites are not accepted), and health insurance from an accredited insurance company. No extension wording was observed on this detail page.
  • Free on-arrival tourist visa for a maximum of 90 days for Ukrainian nationals (detail page not opened).
  • On-arrival tourist or business visa for 30 days for Iranian nationals, for a fee (detail page not opened).
  • On-arrival tourist or business visa for 30 days for Belarus nationals, for a fee (detail page not opened).
  • Single-entry on-arrival visa for GCC residents, for a fee of QR100, for 30 days, extendable (detail page opened): the resident’s profession must be one of the approved professions (206 professions). The QR100 is the on-arrival visa fee; extension length, procedure and fee were not stated.
  • Single-entry on-arrival visa for those accompanying GCC citizens, for a fee of QR100, for 30 days, which can be extended (detail page opened): terms include a valid residence permit of not less than 6 months. No extension length, fee or timing rule is stated.

The QR100 figures above are on-arrival visa fees for those categories. They are not extension fees.

Not stated

No apply-before-expiry timing rule, no overall maximum stay or cap across extensions, no cap on the total overstay fine, and no single extension fee for on-arrival or exempted visas are stated on the pages checked. The MOI e-services portal was unreachable at the time of checking, so in-portal listings are unverified.
