UAE Family Visa Sponsorship

A UAE family residence visa lets a resident sponsor family members to live in the UAE on permits linked to the sponsor’s own permit. The core test is salary, not job title — and a family member’s permit can never run longer than the sponsor’s permit. If you meet the salary rule and hold a valid residence permit, this is the route.

Dubai or the rest of the UAE? Start here

ICP handles residence permits outside Dubai; GDRFA handles Dubai. The issuing service described below is ICP’s; if your visa is Dubai-issued, use GDRFA’s route for the same application.

Who you can sponsor

Under the u.ae family-residence rules, a sponsor may bring a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25, and children with special needs. Green visa holders may sponsor first-degree relatives. That is the confirmed list on the pages checked — see the parents note below for what is not listed.

The salary rule

The minimum salary is AED 4,000 per month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, and any job title qualifies at that salary. There is no separate job-title list on the pages checked: the salary figure is the test.

Documents and medical tests

ICP’s issuing service for the family of a foreign resident requires: the family member’s passport (valid for at least 6 months); a personal photo; a water or electricity bill; proof of kinship (attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificates); birth certificates for ages, and special-needs proof where applicable; an employment certificate showing income and housing; an ID copy for nationals of Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq; and valid health insurance. Family members aged 18 and over must pass medical fitness tests. The sponsor must hold a valid UAE residence permit, and the family residence matches — and cannot exceed — the sponsor’s permit.

Fees and timing (ICP, listed separately)

ICP lists these fees separately, with no single total: application 100 AED; issuance per year 100 AED; Smart Service 100 AED; Financial Guarantee Deposit 20 AED; Status Adjustment 500 AED; and case-specific family guarantees (humanitarian cases up to a maximum of 15,000 AED). Completion takes 2 days, and you sign in with UAE Pass to start.

If your family member is a newborn

Birth registration must be completed within a maximum of 30 days, and you have 120 days to arrange the baby’s documents (birth certificate, passport, Emirates ID and visa). After 120 days, a fee of AED 100 per day applies, and the baby cannot exit the country until the documents are arranged.

Parents: what the official pages do not say

The u.ae family page and the ICP foreign-resident category do not list parents as sponsorable family members for an expatriate sponsor, so this guide presents no parents-sponsorship conditions for expatriates — any such conditions you read elsewhere are not confirmed on the official pages checked. A separate route exists for a different case: a UAE citizen’s spouse, parent or child holding a foreign passport can obtain a 5-year residence with the citizen as sponsor. That is a citizen-sponsor route, not an expatriate-sponsor one, and the two are not interchangeable.

Dependents and grace periods — two wordings

Two official wordings exist and are reported separately. The u.ae family page states that dependents are granted a 6-month grace period from the date of expiry or cancellation of their visas to obtain a new residence permit. The ICP general grace bands after expiry or cancellation are 180, 90, 60 and 30 days depending on permit category. Both are official wordings; check which one applies to the dependent’s permit type. What both wordings agree on is the ordering rule: a sponsor’s cancellation requires the dependents’ cancellation to be handled — see the visa cancellation guide before cancelling a sponsor’s permit.
