Qatar Residence Permits: Online Renewal, Category Names, and Work Permit Checks (What the Official Pages State)
If you are renewing a residence permit online or checking which category name applies, this guide covers only what the official pages state. The renewal core is verified: online renewal for 1 to 3 years, the smartcard steps, the renewal fee table, renewal 3 months before expiry, and the Status box line for a rejection reason. This guide also lists the official non-work residence category names and the medical and fingerprint prerequisite for a Work Residence Permit.
It does not state per-type validity, first-issue cost, or requirements for each type, because the official pages do not state them. Read the renewal fees below as renewal fees only. They are not first-issue fees, and no first-issue figure is stated.
How online renewal runs, and how long it covers
MOI allows individuals and companies to renew a residence permit online for 1 to 3 years. The online renewal is available to Qataris, residents, and companies holding Qatari Smart ID Cards.
- Online, the route stated on the Hukoomi page is smartcard login to MOI e-services, then Residency Services, then Renew Residency.
- Individuals select up to five QID numbers and companies select up to twenty.
- The applicant chooses the renewal period and the delivery option, and pays the applicable fees.
- A receipt is shown after payment, and delivery is via Qatar Post.
The Hukoomi page also states an offline route, form plus a copy of the valid employer’s ID for personal sponsorships or Establishment ID for government entities, institutions, and companies, to the Expatriates Affairs Department, and this guide covers the online route only.
A residence permit can be renewed 3 months prior to expiry. The system displays the residence permit rejection reason for any personal number in the Status box. That is the only rejection-reason line stated on the Hukoomi renewal page. No list of rejection reasons is given, and none is added here.
Renewal fees stated on the Hukoomi page
The fees in this section are renewal fees as stated on the Hukoomi Renew Residence Permit For Expatriates page. They apply to renewal only, and the table names only the categories below.
- QR500 for wife, children, and family sponsorships.
- QR1000 for employees sponsored by companies, institutions and shops.
- QR300 for employees on personal sponsorships, servants, farmers and sailors.
- 20 percent discount for a three-year renewal, for personal sponsorship, companies, wife, children, and family sponsorship.
- An extra QR20 for Qatar Post delivery.
No renewal fee is stated on the page for investor, real-estate, or educational permits, and no fee for those categories is given here. No first-issue fee is stated on the page, and no first-issue fee is given here.
Non-work residence categories named on the MOI page
The MOI Department Services page for Entry Visas for Non-work Residence lists category names only. It does not state requirements, validity, or fees for any category on that page. The category names as listed are:
- Family Residence Visa
- Residence visa for spouse, children and parents of Investor, real estate owner or beneficiary of a residential unit
- Residence visa for beneficiary of residential unit
- Educational Residence Visa
- Visa for New Born Babies
- Residence visa for Realestate Owner
Each category on the MOI page links to an application form, with form titles only given as Family Visa Application Form and Residence Entry Application Form. No requirement, validity period, or fee is stated for any category on that page, and none is added here. Work residence permits sit in a separate MOI service category, and no work-permit category list is stated on the pages cited here beyond the Work Residence Permit prerequisite in the next section.
Medical and fingerprint checks before a Work Residence Permit
The Medical Commission exam’s purpose, as stated on the Hukoomi Medical Commission page, is to protect the health of the population and prevent the spread of infectious diseases from newcomers. Health screening after landing is required for newcomers who wish to work and live in Qatar before a Work Residence Permit is received. Job seekers from Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Sudan must also complete a separate medical check-up at home through an approved clinic abroad before coming to Qatar.
- A blood-type certificate comes first, before the Medical Commission exam.
- That exam screens for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B and C through a blood test and a chest X-ray.
- Digital fingerprint registration with MOI follows the medical test for adults, and a medical examination is also required for each adult family member over 18.
Workers in restaurants, barber shops, laundries, health clubs, and other public places are required to undergo annual health checks, as stated on the same page. Confirm the current medical and fingerprint sequence on the live official pages before you act, because the Hukoomi Medical Commission page uses stale, 2015-era wording describing facilities as expected to be fully operational by 2015. The sequence above is given only as stated on that page, and no current centre list is given here.
What the official pages do not state
The official pages do not state a validity period for each permit type beyond the general 1 to 3 year renewal window. They do not state a first-issue cost for any type. They do not state the requirements or documents for each type, including work, family, investor and real-estate, educational, and newborn permits. Those gaps are stated plainly here rather than filled from mirror or competitor pages, because the mirror and competitor figures conflict with each other and with the verified renewal figures.
Payment, delivery and the receipt on the renewal page
The renewal page states the payment and delivery part of the online route in plain terms. After successful payment, a receipt will be shown to the applicant. The applicant should select the method of receiving the new residence permit, which is via Qatar Post delivery. The page also states that residence permits can be renewed through Metrash2 — the old name; the current app name is Metrash — so the smartcard route on the MOI e-services portal is not the only renewal channel named on the page. No other receipt rule is added here.
Related services named on the same renewal page
The same Hukoomi renewal page names two related services at the foot of the page, and they are named here only so the reader does not mistake them for part of renewal. Business Leave Notification: all expatriates except wives and children under the sponsorship of their family members are required to obtain a business leave notification when leaving Qatar. Request to Cancel Residence Permit: this service enables you to cancel valid Residence Permits for persons under company or personal sponsorships. No steps, documents or fees for either service are stated on the renewal page, and none is given here.
Medical checks and families
For workers’ families the same rules apply, and each adult family member over the age of 18 is required by law to have a medical examination, as stated on the same Hukoomi page under the same 2015-era staleness note. The current sequence must be confirmed on the live official pages before you act. No centre list is given here.
